If you properly maintain your septic tank, it can last for quite a long time. In fact, if you are proactive about having it pumped and keeping it clear of foreign items, it can last up to 30 years. Septic systems and tanks can be especially expensive to replace. At Curt & Jerry Sewer Service, we recommend following these five tips to make your septic tank last as long as possible.
It’s a good idea to have your septic tank pumped every few years. By cleaning out the tank every few years, you are preventing nasty clogs from forming. This is also very helpful if you have a garbage disposal as grease and fatty foods can build up over time in the tank. Not having it pumped can cause more expensive damage like having the entire leach field replaced.
If you are planting trees or bushes on your property, do not plant them near the septic tank. As roots grow, they can break through sewer lines and spread out through the leach field, causing several problems.
Water-efficient appliances can reduce the overall amount of water entering the septic tank. Consider replacing older appliances with new water-saving appliances like toilets, showerheads, dishwashers, and washing machines. Not only will you save water, but you’ll also save on your utility bills.
The only thing you should be flushing down the toilet is toilet tissue. Many people think it’s okay to flush other items like wipes, sanitary napkins, paper towels, and more. These need to go in a trash can, not the toilet.
Running water down the drain every so often will prevent gas from building up in the lines and tank. When gas builds up, foul odors can back up in your home, and no one wants bad smells coming from your drains.
