Sewer Camera Inspection

How to Prevent Sewer Backups in Your Indianapolis Home

There are times when sewer backups are inevitable. Tree roots force their way through your sewer line, or winter snow and ice have made their way underground, damaging essential sewage pipes. There are also times when backups are caused due to human error. These can be prevented by knowing what can and cannot go down the drain, and properly disposing of the items that should not be in your sewer lines. At Curt & Jerry Sewer Service, we would like to share ways you can prevent, as much as possible, expensive sewer backups in your Indianapolis home.

Causes of Sewer Backups

Clogged drains and backed-up sewers are caused by either people or nature. When items are placed in your home drains in the kitchen or bathroom, like grease, coffee grounds, paper towels, and medication, that are not meant for your sewer system, they can cause serious backups in the sewer line. These are items you can prevent from clogging up your sewer line by not tossing them in your kitchen sink or flushing them down the toilet.

Unfortunately, not much can do to prevent Mother Nature from infiltrating your underground pipes. You can watch for specific signs of root intrusion in your sewer lines, like sinkholes, very slow drains, and bad odors. This will allow you to treat the problem before it gets worse, but it won’t stop Mother Nature from doing what she wants.

How to Prevent Sewer Backups in Your Home

The best way to do your part in preventing sewer backups in your home is to be extra careful about what you throw down your drains. In the kitchen, scrape food off plates and bowls and into the garbage before washing them. In the bathroom, try to dispose of items like feminine products, facial tissues, and clumps of hair in the garbage, rather than rinsing them down the drain.

How to Prevent Sewer Backups in Your Underground Pipes

The only way to know for certain if there is a root running through your sewer line or if a tree has accidentally damaged the sewer line is to have a sewer camera inspection performed. This service can catch any underground issues before they get too big, and become extremely expensive to repair.
