A winter wonderland outside your window may be picturesque and serene, but it can quickly lead to a nightmare in the form of a frozen sewer line. This phenomenon can wreak havoc on your home and property, especially if the line bursts. Curt & Jerry Sewer Service can find issues and resolve them, but preventing them in the first place is always the best way to go. Follow along for four tips on how you can prevent a frozen sewer line this winter.

Prevent Sewer Line Issues

1. Maintain a Steady Drip from Your Faucets

If the weather forecast predicts that temperatures will drop below freezing, you’ll want your faucets to maintain a slow drip. This continuous flow of water will keep things moving along the sewer line, helping to prevent freezing. It may not seem like it, but even a small amount of water dripping can make a difference for your sewer line.

2. Maintain a Warm Temperature in Your Home

This one probably goes without saying, but a warm home will help prevent your sewer line from freezing. Be sure to properly insulate areas where your sewer line is located to retain the heat and minimize their exposure to freezing temperatures. This includes basements and crawl spaces. You’ll also want to seal any cracks or openings in your walls, windows, and foundation to prevent the sub-zero temperatures from reaching your sewer line.

3. Protect Your Outdoor Pipes

Insulate any exposed outside pipes on your property with either foam pipe insulation or heating tape. These sewer lines will be especially vulnerable to frigid air. If you haven’t already completed this task, go ahead and disconnect your outdoor hoses and drain them. This will prevent water from freezing in them, which could also impact your sewer line.

4. Act Promptly if You Observe Warning Signs

When the temperatures reach dangerous lows, you must be acutely aware of any changes or issues within your home and property. If you observe unusually slow drainage or your drain emits gurgling sounds, you might be experiencing an early sign of a frozen sewer line. This is a good time to call the professionals to deter an unfortunate and costly situation quickly.
